WoW Mage Leveling Spec

There is plenty of interesting content awaiting your discovery in the newly renovated lands of the World of Warcraft, since Azeroth has been largely reshaped by Deathwing’s coming and the devastation it brought. Leveling new characters is exciting again, with plenty of new quests, quest hubs, changes to once-familiar areas, and beautiful new landscapes where there were once rather dull and ordinary flat areas with trees growing on them (as, for example, in Darkshore). Choosing a good WoW mage leveling spec can enhance your enjoyment of the game yet further, and ease your passage through the lower levels.

The frost specialization is one of the most frequently chosen, thanks to the fact that it helps with your mage’s ability to survive, even if it dishes out a bit less damage than either Fire or Arcane spec. Hurling frostbolts that slow your opponents down, being able to freeze enemies in place, summoning a water elemental pet which is a formidable ranged combatant in its own right, and having a few “panic buttons” available (such as embedding your character in a giant ice cube using the Ice Block spell) all combine to make your character a bit harder to kill and a bit easier to level with.

Fire talent builds for WoW mage leveling spec are a bit more vulnerable than frost, since they have less ways to keep hostile creatures at a distance. Fire mages are able to deal a lot of damage, however, and have many abilities that increase their speed and mobility.

Arcane mages do slightly less damage, but are the Swiss army knife of the mage world. Their counterspells, special abilities, improved Blink spell, and so on all make them intriguing characters to level, although they are also one of the most complex characters to play in World of Warcraft.

Although not technically part of your mage’s talent specialization, the race of your character has a slight impact on how well they do while leveling also. Gnomes, for example, have a slightly larger mana pool than other characters, which can keep them in combat longer and reduce the downtime between fights. Draenei have a scaling, self-healing ability which makes them a viable leveling race, while the speed boost racial ability of Worgen increases their mobility – always an important consideration for the “run and gun” tactics of mages.

On the Horde side, racial abilities are, as ever, quite a bit more robust than the half-baked abilities given to the Alliance. Orcs and trolls are usually considered to be the best mages for leveling, since orcs gain spellpower from their Blood Fury ability, while trolls benefit both from their Beast Slaying ability while questing, and from the spell haste granted by Berserking. These differences are fairly minimal, however, and unless you are an optimization fanatic, just pick the race you like best to level as a mage.

WoW Warlock Leveling Guide

Leveling as a warlock in World of Warcraft is fairly swift, thanks to the high damage that the class is capable of – though this is somewhat counterbalanced by the fact that the class can only wear cloth armor, and is thus, in the parlance of the game, classified as “squishy”. The use of summoned demon pets for tanking is one way to offset this problem, as is skillful use of fear-based abilities to keep enemies at arm’s length. This latter technique has the disadvantage of possibly drawing extra creatures into the fight, however. This WoW warlock leveling guide has several suggestions to make leveling with this class easier, as well.

Warlocks are fairly resilient and interesting to play, as long as you make the most of their unique abilities. For example, as soon as these spells become available, you should have a Healthstone and a Soulstone available at all times while there is any risk of your warlock being attacked or killed.

Hotkey the Healthstone so that you will not need to sift desperately through your character’s packs while some creature pummels them nearer and nearer to death. Healthstones are best used when you are not quite desperate yet, since at that point, the stone is unlikely to swing the fight in your character’s favor, but just make it more likely that they can escape. If the worst happens, then a Soulstone can save your character a graveyard run – although you should check to see if any enemies are wandering nearby before resurrecting.

Life Tap is a good way to keep your warlock moving rapidly through content. This spell converts life into mana, allowing your warlock to “mana up” quickly after a fight – or even during one, when mana begins to run low. Rapid mana regeneration, followed by rapid healing (both of which can be carried out while the character is “in combat”), can be used effectively while the warlock’s pet tanks for them.

Rogue Assassination Leveling Guide for Cataclysm

Both assassination and combat specs are viable leveling talent specializations for rogues in World of Warcraft, and if you are looking for a rogue assassination leveling guide for Cataclysm, there is plenty of informative material available online. Assassination rogues lag behind combat rogues somewhat in early to mid game staying power – there are moments when you will be reduced to fleeing a fight which a combat rogue might have been able to survive without resorting to retreat – but the spec is much better than Subtlety in most ways, as well.

Opening moves are always important for a rogue, since they are the only class that approaches a foe in stealth most of the time and usually leave stealth with an attack. An assassination rogue’s opening moves should not be based on either Ambush or Backstab despite the spec’s use of daggers, because of the mechanical nature of an assassination rogue’s powers.

Garrote is the best opening move for an assassination rogue, but if this impractical, then you can opt to have your character open the fight with Mutilate instead. Basically, your character should not spend a long time trying to set up for a Garrote. If it is proving difficult to use the attack, then you will lose more damage by wasting time trying to get in position for it than you will gain by using it, and should employ Mutilate instead for the sake of speed. This is especially true in dungeons and raids.

Build some quick combo points after using Garrote (or Mutilate), then apply Rupture and get Slice and Dice active as fast as you can. Once your character is in combat, use Mutilate and Sinister Strike as your main moves, and reapply Rupture whenever it is about to stop ticking. Use Envenom, which burns Deadly Poison applications for a spike of burst damage, whenever there are five combo points on your adversary. Hopefully, your energy will be high at this point so that you can follow up with Mutilate, but this is not absolutely necessary.

Assassination rogues should use daggers to allow the use of Mutilate, and should have a slow dagger in the main hand and a fast one in the offhand. Poison the main hand weapon with Instant Poison and the offhand weapon with Deadly Poison for best effect. Putting a single talent point into Deadly Brew gives you a 50% chance of applying Crippling Poison every time your Instant Poison hits, which will remove the need for using Crippling Poison separately.

Fighting a druid in the battlegrounds can be like battling quicksilver – switching between forms, druids can change from rugged survivability to deadly spellcasting to elusive speed in a matter of moments, shedding snares like a duck sheds water, and healing themselves to maximum whenever it appears they might actually perish.

Outside the battlegrounds, druids are also highly effective, as any WoW druid guide will tell you. Each talent specialization has its own powers and focus, but can serve in other roles at a pinch as well, unlike, for example, paladins, who need to respec to function in a different manner than usual. Since the level requirement and cost of dual talent specialization have been drastically lowered, this advantage is less important than it once was, since most other classes can now switch specs at the push of a button as well. Balance druids are focused on spellcasting, with talents that improve both direct damage spells and damage over time spells (DoTs). With the introduction of Lunar and Solar power, the balance druid has become more complex to play, but is also very powerful.

WoW Cataclysm Fury Warrior Guide

Fury warriors are the damage per second (DPS) talent specialization of warriors in World of Warcraft, though unlike other classes’ DPS specs, they are paradoxically poor in battlegrounds unless they are both highly geared and played with extreme skill. As any WoW Cataclysm fury warrior guide will tell you, this spec has two primary uses – for rapid leveling, and for PvE damage in endgame raiding situations for those who prefer melee damage to ranged damage for these battles.

Fury warriors have recently become even poorer choices for PvP thanks to changes to Colossus Smash. This primary maneuver of the spec, used at the endgame, reduces the armor of your opponent for six seconds and is the only viable opener for a fury warrior rotation that means to inflict any meaningful damage.

Leveling Paladins in WoW Cataclysm

Paladins, armored in plate, wielding the power of the Light, blasting their foes with holy fire and standing as a bulwark between their companions and some of the most dreadful villains in the World of Warcraft game, are a signature class of WoW, and offer a lot of utility to their players. Able to damage, heal, and survive, these tough, versatile characters are available to both factions and have seen enough improvements to finally be fairly equal to other classes. Leveling paladins in WoW Cataclysm is a fairly rapid process thanks to the flexibility and durability of the class.

Most people who level paladins to 85 quickly do so in Retribution spec, because this talent specialization offers the highest damage per second of the three talent trees. Their high damage potential means that they can cut their way quickly through all kinds of content, including quests, dungeons, and battlegrounds. They specialize in wielding two-handed weapons.

However, leveling as protection paladin is another way of leveling paladins in WoW Cataclysm that will bear fruit if done properly. These paladins are able to survive fighting a small crowd of opponents at the same time, using Avenger’s Shield, Consecration, and other AoE abilities to wear down multiple opponents at once.

The damage potential of this spec is very low, and although your character will probably never die on a level-appropriate quest, killing an opponent will probably take ten minutes or so with the feeble damage output your character is capable of. However, there are ways to level up as a holy paladin more efficiently.

One of these ways is to become a battleground healer. Healers are in short supply in the lower level battlegrounds, and if you use your character skillfully, you may be able to turn the tide of the whole battleground with well-placed heals. For example, in Warsong Gulch, heal the flag carrier; in Arathi Basin, heal people who are defending a critical base such as the Blacksmith.

An even more efficient way to level as a holy paladin is to heal instance groups. Since healers are fairly rare, you will benefit from short queue times and will be able to squeeze in numerous instances in a few hours of play.

Enhancement shamans are marginally more preferred to other talent specializations for leveling because of their reliance on melee damage and relative sturdiness. Tough and combative, this spec does not need to keep their foes at arm’s length in order to survive. An enhancement shaman must use two one-handed weapons in order to make use of most of their spells and abilities, so you should equip your shaman with maces, axes, or fist weapons – preferably those with a high amount of Agility.

Agility is the core of most enhancement shaman abilities, so as soon as your character reaches level 40, you should fit them out with a complete set of mail armor as fast as you can to get the additional Agility buff. You should use Windfury Weapon on your main hand weapon at a minimum, due to the high chance of getting extra attacks. This spell can also be released with Unleash Wind, which causes 125% of weapon damage to your current target and boosts your melee attack speed by 40% for the next six attacks. Once Maelstrom Weapon is available, use most of it for instant Lightning Bolts, but always be ready for a swift healing spell, too.

Elemental shamans can also be played effectively for quick leveling if desired, though they are a caster spec and therefore less able to survive in melee. Lower level elemental shamans need to rely on lightning and shock spells for damage, but once Lava Burst is learned at level 34, the focus of this spec changes entirely.

After this point, your character’s most important moves, as this WoW Cataclysm shaman leveling guide sees it, are to cast Flame Shock first of all, and then Lava Burst immediately afterward. Flame Shock’s damage over time effect on the target will cause your Lava Burst to be an automatic critical hit, devastating the opponent. Mages in World of Warcraft are a very powerful class, able to strike down their foes at a distance using blasts of fire, shattering bursts of ice, or the white energy of arcane force itself. They also have many other utility powers, including the ability to blink from place to place instantly without crossing the ground in between, slow their fall so that they can survive plunging over cliffs, conjure food and drink for themselves or allies, silence enemy spellcasters to prevent them from using their powers for several critical seconds, and so on. WoW mage leveling requires a good deal of skill and knowledge, however, because mages are also fragile – armored only with cloth, feeble in melee, and with generally low health totals.

Fire mages are one of the more viable leveling specs due to their high damage output, and the talents which give them speed boosts from time to time, making them elusive targets for enemy monsters. They generally fare poorly in PvP (player versus player) battlegrounds, due to their inability to slow down opposing player characters and their lack of “panic buttons” such as the Ice Barrier talent found in the Frost tree. However, for leveling, you can make use of this spec effectively if you know what to do.

The tactics for a leveling fire mage in WoW are basic “run and gun” techniques. You should open with your high-damage Pyroblast when possible, since it is a very slow spell, and you want to cast it before the target is aggressive to your character.

Pyroblast is often used for “pulling”, or starting a fight, but is less useful once battle has begun (though an immobilized opponent can sometimes be hit with a second Pyroblast, and deep fire talents sometimes cause an instant Pyroblast to proc). At level 69, you should put your last few talent points into Frost’s Piercing Ice and Arcane’s Netherwind Presence for improved crit and spell haste, respectively.

WoW mage leveling in Frost is preferred by many people, however, due to the spec’s ability to keep opponents at arm’s length more easily by slowing or freezing them outright. The frost spec does less damage than fire, so those who want dramatic numbers and swift kills should probably opt for (or at least experiment with) fire. Frost mages have a lot of survivability, however, and are able to control the fight much more effectively than their fiery or arcane brethren.

Once your frost mage reaches level 69, a full 31 talent points will have been spent in the frost tree, and the remaining talent points can be used in other trees if desired. The frost leveling spec benefits most from putting these last few points into the Arcane talent tree, speeding up spellcasting, earning reduced mana costs for spells, and so on.

Arcane is now a viable leveling spec as well, and resembles fire (high damage, lower survivability) with a large box of “tricks”, such as counterspells and Improved Blink. To level using this spec, you should try to maintain mobility and maximize your use of quick or instant spells as well.

Fire Mage seems to be the prevailing popular WoW Mage leveling build for Cataclysm. There are viable options in the Frost Spec that I will add later and the Arcane Tree seems to stay as a more viable option at higher levels.

Talents & WoW Mage Leveling Guide Options.

You get to choose your first talent point at level 10 and this means choosing a specialization. You will be either Fire, Frost or Arcane until level 69 (you must put 31 points in your primary specialization) You will then have 10 more points available to put in the other trees by level 85.

Mastery is a trainable skill that you have access to upon achieving level 80. Gear will come withMastery Rating, which will increase the Mastery effect much like Crit Rating does now. Whether stacking lots of Mastery is really worthwhile, compared to crit or anything else, remains to be seen and we won’t say much about it on this page.

You no longer learn several levels of spell. You buy the spell once and it scales as you level.

Leveling Tips

The general routine is this: Keep the opposition at maximum range wherever possible and blast away. Use Frost Nova when the mob gets too close, get some range and blast away. You will probably want to have a wand handy for those rare times when you are low on mana, and use the wand when the mob is running away from you or your partner is tanking it.

Food – Keep well stocked. Regular foods are great if you need to recover a lot of HP. Beverages keep your mana up. Your Create Water & Create Food are free, use them. You can usually find beverages that will recover more mana than the spell in certain level ranges, so grab those when appropriate, but again… the spell is free. :)

First Aid – An essential skill, too bad there isn’t a “first aid for Mana.” Keep it maxed.

Crafting- skip the crafting professions unless you have a ton of cash. If youi want to go for it, and you don’t need to gather stuff to sell, then there are a couple of good combiniations:

  • Herbalism and Alchemy – You’ll be able to create lots of very useful potions with the stuff that you gather, this keeps your costs way down.
  • Skinning and Mining (or Herbalism) – not that you have use for the pieces, but it’s a great money making combo. Builds Stam and Crit rating, too.
  • Tailoring and Enchanting – Enchanting is very expensive to level (that’s why there are so many ‘chanters in chat offering their services with your mats.)You can use it here, though, todisenchant many of the surplus items that you make with tailoring. The mats created will sell for more than the items. Or save the mats and use them for the enchants. By the way, some clothes sell for nice prices. Check them out before junking them.

Wands – these aren’t quite as useful as with other caster classes, since they mobs will usually be running towards you, rather than away from you (fear spells,) but if your tank is holding aggro and you’re low on mana, then wands are great.

Bank alt- make a bank alt so you can mail your stuff and get back to leveling. Yes, you can ‘port to the city, but ‘porting back to your leveling area isn’t quite so easy.

Develop eyes in the back of your head, especially on PvP servers. It’s not that you can’t do damage up close, it’s that you can’t take it. See what’s coming before it surpirses you and learn to love theFrost Nova, especially when sneaky things are about.
